How to Design a His & Hers Wardrobe?

Custom storage solutions, convenient dressing areas, glamorous design details – these spaces have everything you could want in a closet.

A great closet designed for him and her isn’t about having enough space; it’s about each person having the enough of the right type of space they need.

Too many clothes, not enough closet space? An everyday situation for most of us even when our wardrobes are packed to the edge with clothes. And there is a reason! Not all of us are blessed with big walk-in closets; smaller wardrobes, the more stressful it is to keep it organised. But a few smart design hacks here and there can fix this for you.

A CLOSET FULL OF CLOTHES, AND NOTHING TO WEAR

It’s so much easier to get dressed in the morning when you can see what you’ve got. Purses, hats, even sunglasses are more easily stored on open shelves or on slim pull-out shelves rather than in enclosed drawers or behind cabinet doors. And by definition, if your clothes are hanging in the closet or folded on a shelf, they’re put away. You don’t have to hide them further behind a second door.

Think of your closet as your own personal boutique. By keeping your clothes and shoes where you can see them, you may find it’s a lot easier to decide what to wear.

Principles should be followed while designing the internal layout of a his and hers wardrobe?

  • Literally measure the length of your shirts—men’s and women’s clothing is, of course, sized very differently. Your closet should be designed to accommodate not only how much clothing you have, but the types and the sizes.
  • Measure the maximum length of your clothes that you wish to hang (especially when it comes to women’s saris, dresses or gowns) and then decide the length of the vertical hanger sections of the wardrobe.
  • If you have a lot of small items to store inside your closet, you should consider including drawers and/or pull-out wire baskets. They are available in standard widths of 18, 24, and 30-inches.
  • Fully opened baskets extend 26-inches from the back wall of the closet. Drawers need an extra 1/2-inch due to the handle.

Some Important Numbers to Keep in Mind

  • A clothes closet should have a minimum depth of at least 24 inches deep, so the clothes can clear the back wall.
  • Shelves for women's shoes should be spaced about 6 to 7 inches
  • Shelves for folded clothes should be placed around 12 inches
  • 84 inches is considered the minimum height to hold double hanging rods.
  • Blouses and shirts will take up about 1 inch of rod space, pants and skirts around 1 1/4 inches and dresses, jackets and suits about 2 to 3 inches.
